Fortaleza Esporte Clube, the Brazilian Serie A football club, has requested that the CBF recognize the 1970 Norte-Nordeste Tournament as a Brazilian title. The request was made in conjunction with the clubs Sport and Ceará, which also won titles in the competition. The CBF will send the request to the legal department and consult with historians about the recognition of Brazilian titles. The chance of approval is considered high, as the Northeast is seen as an important base of support for the management of Samir Xaud. Mauro Carmélio, president of the Federação Cearense de Futebol, is one of the main articulators of the request. The Norte-Nordeste Tournament was misinterpreted as a regionalized competition, when in fact it was part of the Brazilian football nationalization project promoted by the Confederação Brasileira de Desportos. The dossier produced by the clubs includes documents that show that the CBD regulation provided that the Norte-Nordeste champion would face the winners of the Taça Brasil, the Robertão, and a Centro-Sul tournament to define the Brazilian champion of the year. Looking back, in 2023, the CBF approved the request of Atlético-MG to recognize as a Brazilian title a national tournament from 1937. There is no defined deadline for the conclusion of the analysis of the request from the Northeast clubs, but the expectation is that the decision will be known by the beginning of 2026. So, what does this mean for Fortaleza Esporte Clube? If the request is approved, the club will be able to include the 1970 title in its list of achievements. But, for this to happen, the CBF needs to validate the request and recognize the Norte-Nordeste Tournament as a national-level competition.
